St Laurence's College Urban Farm
South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
St Laurence’s College Urban Farm was established in January 2015. It is located on approximately 500 sqm on the school campus and is an important part of College life. The Urban Farm is a Safe Food Queensland Accredited Egg Producer thanks to a well-established chicken coop with 15 laying hens housed in a RSPCA approved chicken coop, and 6 bantams in an adjoining coop. Other livestock include three fish tanks, containing Jade Perch and Goldfish, as well as a thriving worm farm (approx. 5000 worms) and a native bee hive (approx. 8000 native stingless bees). Using organic soil garden beds and aquaponics beds, compost tumblers and 5 x 10,000 litre rainwater tanks with pumps, the farm provides a practical demonstration of food production and food producing systems in an urban setting. St Laurence's College Urban Farm is managed by teachers and students, who work tirelessly to maintain and develop this thriving Urban Farm. Ms Nataleen Kilburn (Head of Humanities Faculty) is the farm's General Manager, while Mr Brendan Bartlett is the Farm Caretaker.
